How to keep your mobile virus-free
It's a common misconception that mobiles are immune to hackers
and malicious code. Viruses impact on smartphones the same way they
do laptops and desktop computers - ie they can cripple your device
completely or damage information saved on it. Read on for our
advice to make sure this doesn't happen.
The take-up of increasingly powerful mobile internet devices is
growing every year. While this is great for communications, it's
also an opportunity for international communities of cyber
criminals who threaten web-based software for fun.
As the number of handsets grows, threats to the security of
those devices through viruses and other malware has increased
too.
Your smartphone can become infected through a number of channels
including:
- Sharing memory cards
- Downloading files from disreputable sources
- MMS or SMS (text messages)
- Spam or phishing emails
- Bluetooth connectivity
In the worst case scenarios, cyber punks can render your phone
useless or steal money by sending text messages on your behalf or
making unwanted calls to premium numbers without the mobile owner
knowing what is happening.
As in the case of laptops and desktop computers, the best way to
combat cyber criminals is to a) be careful to not download files
from unknown sources; b) To ignore unsolicited messages in text or
email form and c) download mobile phone antivirus software.
A quick search online will reveal a host of recognised software
companies that offer free downloads of antivirus software.
Depending on your needs you may want to upgrade to a premium
version of the software at a small cost.
However you decide to protect your mobile network the important
message to keep in mind is that modern phones are just as
vulnerable to malicious attack as any other form of computer.
Remember this fact when reviewing your security procedures and your
risk will be greatly reduced.
