Sophie and Holly founded NotOnTheHighStreet.com in April 2006 - they had 16,000 visitors on their first day. Backgrounds in journalism and media helped them, but it was their first-to-market website showcasing totally unique, handmade and downright beautiful gifts and homeware items that really drew in the masses.
They'd tapped into a real market need. Everyone they knew loved these items, but they couldn't find them. And the tiny one-person businesses and craft-makers behind the products simply couldn't afford the high-street premises and exposure they needed to find customers. NotOnTheHighStreet.com changed that, giving tiny business making pretty, unique things a platform to reach a massive audience.
Turnover increased 600% in their first year. Since then, the business has grown to a team of more than 40 and attracted VC funding from the highly desireable SPARK Ventures, who are technology-focused.
