Laura Tenison is the founder and Managing Director of JoJo Maman
Bébé, a maternity wear and baby clothing company that was started
in 1993 and has grown to become one of the biggest brands in the UK
and abroad. The idea came about after a bad car crash in France
left Tenison in hospital and her neighbour complained about the
lack of fashionable mail order children's wear in the market. Laura
also works as Volunteer Welsh Assembly Role Model and gives
motivational talks to 15 year olds in comprehensive schools in
Wales.
In this video interview the successful retail entrepreneur talks
about how she started up JoJo Maman Bébé and what stages were
involved in setting up the business, including her initial use of
capital, catalogue creation and securing factories not to mention
product design. She relates the benefits of in house business and
why she didn't employ a PR or marketing agency.
Laura Tenison also explains why she isn't the stereotypical
entrepreneur, her moralistic attitude toward business and some cost
saving measures she uses. Tenison also gives expert advice on store
maintenance and importance of delivering the best customer service.
She touches on international expansion and why a recession can
actually lead to an increase in the birth rate and therefore an
increase in sales.
