Figured out: franchising
How many franchisees are women? How much does the industry add to the UK economy? We find out.
£11.4 billion: the non-too-shabby
total economic contribution of the UK's franchising activity in
2008.
82%:
of all franchisees are married (though we can't promise that by
starting one up you'll find the partner of your dreams).
48%: of franchisors recruit through
their own website.
838: the total number of companies actively franchising in the UK.
There's a franchise operation in almost any sector you can think
of, though fast food and restaurant chains are the most common
(think McDonald's, KFC, et al).
£15,000: avergage purchase costs for a
franchise. But new franchisees need an average of £50,400 for
everything needed to open.
467,000: the number of people employed
in franchising in the UK - not far off 1% of the population.
£326,000: the average turnover of a
franchise business.
47: the average age of
franchisees.
42: the average age of a new
franchisee.
17%: of new franchisees are Asian.
4%: are black.
7: the average number of people
franchisors interview before they find the right candidate for each
opportunity. You normally have to go through a series of interviews
before being able to run a franchise - you are representing someone
else's brand, after all.
278: the number of British-run franchise
systems with an international presence.
75%: of UK
franchise systems, though, are headquarted in this country.
45%: the amount of franchisees who use
information sites, such as whichfranchise.com when searching for
information on franchisors. Whichfranchise.com and thebfa.org are the
most widely used sites.
One third: the number of new franchise owners that are female.
