60 second start-up: Gooroo Software
ean Miles goes head-to-head with the Smarta timekeepers to pitch his idea.
0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence
Gooroo charges small
businesses a monthly fee for a complete online business management
software suite without the need to buy, install or manage expensive
applications.
5-10 seconds: What's the business model?
I wish I had come up with the idea for taxation. Wouldn't it be
great to take a percentage of everything everyone does, and give
mostly promises in return?
Instead of buying CRM, accounts and stock control software
packages and having all the headaches of supporting and running
them, our software is a service. It runs in the cloud, and people
access it from their web browser.
10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?
We don't have a direct competitor. A number of companies like
Salesforce.com, Google and others offer some parts of what we do,
but none offers the complete package.
15-20 seconds: What's your USP?
We're the only company to offer a complete business management
suite in the cloud. Others offer parts of the jigsaw but not the
whole picture.
20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?
Private funding.
25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?
I was a digital media consultant and TV producer.
30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?
The software as a service (SaaS) or cloud model isn't new - but
it had always been aimed at large companies. We thought 'why
shouldn't small businesses be able to take advantage of the cloud
too?' After all, they have less cash to spend on IT, and can get
more benefit from the savings.
35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so
far?
Worked closely with some early users to make sure the software
really addresses business needs.
40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?
Believing software developers when they said 'you should do it
THIS way'.
45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it
be?
A triple chocolate chunk and nut cookie, because it's full of
good stuff.
50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?
Taxation. Wouldn't it be great to take a percentage of
everything everyone does, and give mostly promises in return?
55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months'
time?
Still here, with a growing customer base and even richer online
applications.
