Improving our SEO despite using common keywords
Overview
We had to find a way to improve our visibility online but the keywords
we needed to use to be found on Google are very common. We had to
find an innovative way for people to search for commonly-used
keywords and find us without blowing the bank.
The challenge
'Marketing' is a very heavily used keyword, and
marketing-oriented websites are, literally, in the hundreds of
thousands. But we had to optimize the website for keywords and
phrases like 'marketing planning', 'internet marketing', 'marketing
communications', 'SEO' and 'PPC' to reach potential customers. A pay-per-click
campaign would have required heavy investment, blowing our
budget.
The solution
The second search engine after Google is YouTube, not Bing or
Yahoo. With more than one billion clips watched a day, and 300
million uniques a month, getting YouTube working for you means
great exposure. I decided to create our own YouTube channel, with
about 33% of our videos free of charge, but carrying our logos and
call to action.
I did the same on about 10 other major videos channels (such as 5min.com). I then
sat back and watch thousands of people watching our clips - and
then about 10% of those viewers visiting our main site www.oxlearn.com.
The initial work is really hard. Title, description, metatags and
initial image must be carefully chosen - but then it's a great
engine working for you.
Key lesson
Always look at all your weapons and no just at the usual SEO
tips. Video clips are now featured in natural Google search, and
after three months one of our clips is on the first page of
Google!
Top tip
Use a website called www.tubemogul.com to help you to upload all
your clips in different videos sites. A real time saver!
