First day jitters
My my, Mr. Mandelson – we have been naughty. Pesky Peter, or the Rt Hon Lord Mandelson of Foy and Hartlepool, Secretary of State, Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, as he is latterly known, has already been making waves – not least on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show yesterday, where he made an impassioned (and remarkably convincing) defence against his alleged associations with certain major businessmen.Tomorrow, though, will be His Lordship’s day of reckoning. At 10.30am, we’ll all be settling around our computer screens with a mug of hot cocoa, ready to watch
his first appearance in the House of Commons .So what is he expected to talk about? Rumours already abound. The Guardian’s Andrew Sparrow
, has suggested not only that he’s considering privatising Royal Mail, but also that he’s reconsidering the government’s position on extending flexible working rights. Stop looking so pleased at the back.Anyway, Smarta has plenty advice to offer Mandy at his first day back. As with any job, he needs to be himself. Businesses have already given him a warm welcome – as long as he remembers who his allies are, he’ll be fine.
