Enterprising Young Brits

darling.jpgWe’re only two days in, but Smarta has been working its socks off trying to get to as many Enterprise Week events as possible. This morning, we popped into the launch of Make Your Mark’s Enterprising Young Brits Awards. The awards are looking for the best social, teen, creative and global entrepreneurs to join past winners such as Glasses Direct founder Jamie Murray Wells, SportStars founder (and Last Millionaire Standing contestant) James Taylor and Espotting founder Oliver Bishop to showcase their businesses for the chance to win £1,000 as well as ‘money-can’t-buy’ press attention for your venture. The awards were launched by Alistair Darling, who used the event to clarify now is the time for governments to make sure they are supporting the business stars of tomorrow.“It’s worth bearing in mind that just as we are seeing some of the risks of globalisation, with the American sub-prime crisis causing a global economic crisis, we’re also seeing growth, and there are huge opportunities. This is the time for governments to be supporting small businesses.”He said it was important to make sure young entrepreneurs have the best support possible so they can get on with developing their ideas.“The future depends on the next generation coming up with ideas. What matters is that individuals are motivated and get the support they need to turn ideas into sound business propositions,” he said.We look forward to seeing the government deliver on that promise.
