60-second start-up: DIG IT

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We provide an initial consultation with the school or organisation, and then we create a layout drawing with different features and the installation backed up by our 'LEARNING without WALLS' workshops and teachers' lesson plans.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Various charity organisations deliver similar projects but we can provide a more rounded and full package to cater for their every need, from installation to maintenance to website resources - www.digitprojects.com - as well as on-going support through our workshops and/or our teachers' lesson plans.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

To be able to provide a full package under one roof and provide a web based facility for each individual school/organisation, to showcase their growing efforts and techniques off to others.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

We are a privately-owned business that does not apply for government grants or access public money. We have grown to what we are with little or no outside investment, re-investing the income from projects back into the business.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I ran a landscaping business for about six months until I came up with this idea.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

We were approached by the local council to design and install an allotment area for a local college - they rented the growing beds out to the local community. Something clicked and DIG IT Projects was born.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

I continue to amaze myself with new ideas and put them into practice developing fresh opportunities for the business, but the amount of schools we have developed so far in such a short space of time is pretty impressive.

Also entering the Startups Awards 2010 and being successful in winning the Gooroo Innovative Business of the Year.  This and other awards can be viewed on our website at www.digitprojects.com

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Not thinking of the idea before.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A new innovative product not on the shelf yet, but would be made from fresh ingredients, all locally sourced. One would be a fruity health bar in the shape of the fruit used, the other a vitamin-packed veggie bar called the 'DIG IT bar'.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

All the other start-up contenders deserve to be recognised for their efforts, especially under the present climate. I am not jealous of any other business or person but think that there are some good ideas out there - but mine is the best!!

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

Driving and growing the business, taking it to the next level and broadening our network of customers through our website at www.digitprojects.com, developing fresh ideas and diversifying our products and services to meet the demand of our clients.
