60-second start-up: Memonic

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence
Memonic offers any web user the ability to capture the essential of any web page simply by clipping it and saving it onto an online notebook.

What's the business mode?

At Memonic we produce a slick clipper service and the standard app is free. We are also the only white label solution for publishers and will be working with an increasing number of industry names over the coming months.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Evernote, Amplify, Springpad, Mandalay and ReQall.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

The unique clipper service increases productivity and saves time and stress while our white label solution provides an optimum customer retention tool for media companies.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?
Memonic was formed by five co-founders who have funded the business for the first year and a half. Last summer, we raised a million Swiss francs in a seed funding round.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?
I was founder & CEO of the Swiss local search platform local.ch.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

Back in 2008 I researched a holiday trip to Australia: A drive on the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide. An hour into my research I had countless open browser tabs. Print-outs were a bad idea, and a simple bookmarking list would not suffice either as those would have expired. So I was forced to engage in a dreary copy-paste exercise. I thought then that that was a broken process, which merited a better solution. Hence, Memonic was born.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?
Hiring a number of people much smarter than myself.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?
Not having hired even more people smarter than me. If we had we'd be advancing even faster. But that's a challenge that requires brains, luck and more resources.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A Kambly Bretzeli: SWISS, relatively unknown, but after your first bite you're hooked for life.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

I'd like to have a range of operating system specific desktop solutions for Memonic. But the chagrin is limited: with the white label solution we have a must-want for any publisher: Reader retention.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

Continuing to grow the company and expanding further into Germany and the UK and beyond delivering solutions for end users and publishers.
