Meet the BlackBerry PlayBook: RIM launches its iPad rival

Are you ready for the science bit? The PlayBook runs Adobe Flash 10.1 (which gives it a bit of an edge over the iPad, as Apple refuses to use Flash) as well as HTML-5 (the new programming language that lets you see cool things like this) and it claims its the fastest tablet ever, with a 1 GHz dual-core processor.

It can have multiple windows open at a time, meaning you can watch a film or two, browse the web and write an email at the same time (should your concentration be capable of such a feat). It also has video cameras on the front and back (handy for video conferencing), 1080p hardware-accelerated video, Micro HDMI and Micro USB connections, and an e-reader app. Phew.

But there's more still - as tech mecca TechCrunch.com said earlier: "There's no doubt that the PlayBook rocks some impressive hardware, but that's only a small part of what makes a tablet great. Its future lies in the hands of what seems to be a totally revamped OS." TechCrunch also complimented the PlayBook's full compatibility with BlackBerry Enterprise Servers 'right out of the box. This is of course the bread and butter of RIM's products.'

The work-friendly angle is a strong one for BlackBerry here, as it always has been. At the launch last night, BlackBerry chief executive Mike Lazaridis underlined that core message by saying the PlayBook would be 'the first professional tablet'.

The PlayBook is due for release in January 2011 (though developers can access the OS in the next few weeks), and none of us laymen are allowed to touch it at the moment - not even the tech journos. (No word on price yet either.) So we'll have to wait and see how it measures up to the iPad for work and play once the blogosphere gets its hands on it - but so far, the excited chatter of the internet bodes well for the PlayBook.
