0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence
We are a cruise comparison website that allows consumers to search prices from multiple travel agents instantly.
5-10 seconds: What's the business model?
Essentially, we earn affiliate commission on every sale made through the site. We will also monetise the 'top 10' weekly newsletter when we have a sizable database and are planning to offer 24-hour flash sales with different cruise brands.
10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?
There are two main rivals: Kayak, which is US only, and Travelsupermarket.
15-20 seconds: What's your USP?
CruiseCompare is unique: it's the first to market for the cruise sector exclusively.
20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?
We have had proof of concept funding from Northstar, a venture capital company dedicated to building successful high growth businesses across the North East of England. Northstar invested £96,000.
25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?
I headed up digital marketing for DFDS Seaways (a Danish ferry company).
30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?
Comparison has worked well for hotels and flights and it was model that could be applied to the cruise sector. Before we launched it was very hard - not to mention confusing - to find the perfect cruise holiday for the best price.
35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?
Getting 45,000 Facebook fans in five weeks.
40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?
Buying a new iPhone4 then leaving it in a taxi after a week...
45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?
A chocolate digestive: cheap with a sweet side.
50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?
Moneysupermarket! What a great, consumer-focused site.
55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?
The plan is to increase our presence in the UK, then roll out CruiseCompare in Germany and the US.
