Charlie Sheen sets a Twitter world record

Sheen embarked on a string of appearances after publically condemning Two and a Half Men producer Chuck Lorre. He has revealed aspects of his personal life including his past drug habit and two girlfriends. He joined Twitter on March 1 to cut out the middle man and get direct with his fans.

According to Advertising Age, Sheen was able to get the @CharlieSheen handle and a verified account quickly with the help of Internet startup Ad.ly. They reached out to Twitter to take advantage of Sheen's media frenzy.

With everyone talking about Charlie's so-called "tiger blood" is there anything entrepreneurs can pull from The Sheen Show?

  • Positivity and confidence

Sheen has drawn criticism (okay, a lot of criticism) for some of his rants. But what support he is getting is coming from his take-no-prisoners confidence,  just look at his #winner hashtag on Twitter. "I'm tired of pretending like I'm not special. I'm tired of pretending like I'm not bitching, a total frickin' rock star from Mars," he told The Today Show.

  • The value of direct speech

One of the great things about social media is it allows you to talk to communicate in the most direct way to the people you want to reach. Sheen has been around the media circuit for a long time. He knows what his fans want and how to talk to them. When the controversy started, he went from the primetime, to the direct route.

  • It's all in the name

Charlie Sheen was born Carlos Estevez, but decided to take on his father's screen name when he went into acting. A name can make a lot of difference when taking on the marketplace. Check out Smarta's guide to choosing the right name for your business.
