60-second start-up: Novam

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence

Novam makes moving in London simple, we complete the entire moving process including packing and unpacking as well as changing addresses and utilities; all done while the customer is out of the home.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We are a services business; our revenues come from the removals and extra services we provide to our customers.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Novam is a unique concept, but our competitors are the removal companies that provide a basic removal service in London. We remain competitive from a price point of view and include services like changing addresses on bills and other documents, which others do not.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

Simplicity. We have taken a difficult process and made it simple for our customers. We can move a customer from one location to another without them ever being in the home. Depending on the size of their home, we can literally have their entire home moved by the time they get back from work. This includes changing the bills and addresses, and letting in the Sky engineer. We will even pick up and drop off their keys.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

We are self funded but in future, if the opportunity presents itself, I do see the benefit in raising finance to help grow the company to the next level.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I started my career in the British Army, but having served five years and after completing a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan I decided it was time to leave.

My first job away from the army was with a small clean technology company which grew into one of the fastest growing companies in the UK. After that I founded a sustainability company called Action for Energy, which imported pioneering clean technology into the UK.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

Like many Londoners, my partner and I have moved many times in the city and the experience was never great. We found the process very time consuming, we had to make many calls to change our addresses and bills, arrange removals, meet them and take days off to let the Sky engineer in the house. We knew a company that brought this into one easy package would benefit many Londoners and the concept developed from there.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've
done so far?

Sanity checking the business idea by speaking to prospective customers and getting feedback.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

I would say not launching sooner than we did.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A chocolate Hobnob, partly because it is my favourite biscuit but mainly because they have innovated an original idea and made it a success, which is what we are doing in the removals business.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

The internet. In my life time it has changed the world so much and I imagine it will continue to do so. It has created untold opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs to make money and connect with their customers.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be
in 12 months' time?

At the helm of Novam and very busy making moving home in London simple for our customers.
