Online filing compulsory for all VAT-registered businesses

Since April 2010 most businesses have been obliged to submit their VAT returns and pay any VAT due electronically. This year all VAT-registered businesses, with very few exceptions, will be required to file returns and pay online.

The rules introduced two years ago meant businesses that registered for VAT before 1 April 2010 and had a VAT-exclusive  turnover of £100,000 or more for the 12 months ending 31 December 2009; as well as those that registered after 1 April 2010 regardless of their turnover.

The message from HRMC to those still using their paper forms is to sign up now to give you time to familiarise yourself with the new service. Using the online service should make it quicker and easier to submit your return and pay outstanding VAT. Electronic filing is secure and more convenient as the system is open day and night. Furthermore it includes automatic checks so any mistakes you make when entering your details will be flagged up immediately.

To register for online filing, you'll need the following pieces of information:

  1. Your VAT registration number.
  2. The postcode of your principal place of business.
  3. Your effective date of registration (EDR) for VAT.
  4. The final month of the last VAT return you submitted.
  5. The 'Box 5' figure of the last VAT return you submitted.
