60-second start-up: Bubbleology

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence

Bubbleology is a bubble tea brand, with a café located in Soho and Knightsbridge (Harvey Nichols), as well as a Home Kit product and is soon to go international.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We have established ourselves as a cult drinking experience in London and are expanding this year to further UK locations. 2012 is also the year that we share the delicious science of Bubbleology bubble tea with the rest of the world, opening our first international store in Poland in the next two months, with more to follow.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Although bubble tea has been in the UK for some time, Bubbleology's unique positioning and fun design, means we're starting to forge a truly innovative drinking trend that the media are calling a 'teavolution'. We are the first of our kind to generate greater market awareness of this cult product and hope it will be as big as the coffee drinking market in the UK.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

Bubble tea is a tea based soft drink infused with delicious fruit or milk flavours, with chewy Tapioca pearls at the bottom. We have really strong vibrant, kitsch and pseudo-scientific branding - we're a unique drink served in a unique environment.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

Mostly through equity financing and my own savings.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I was working on the equities trading floor for JP Morgan in New York.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

During my trip in New York, I started drinking a lot of bubble tea and I slowly became hooked on it. When I came back to the UK, I struggled to find an authentic bubble tea anywhere and that was when I  spotted a notable gap in the market.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

My eureka moment when I decided to launch Bubbleology and bring authentic bubble tea to the UK. And my decision to give up banking!

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Not leaving investment banking sooner.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

If Bubbleology was a biscuit, it would be a matcha base with chocolate and a popping candy topping: something totally new, exciting and slightly wacky!

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

I'm not the type to get jealous of other people's successes, instead I am driven to learn why they are successful and learn from them

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

We have plans to expand around the UK - and to have a strong long term international presence. We wrapped up the last leg of our Bubbleology summer tour, where we visited cities such as Edinburgh, Dublin and Leeds, so we definitely have our hearts set on expansion, soon everyone will know what tapioca pearl is!
