The Worcester business, well known for its successful pitch in Dragons' Den, has thrown its weight behind local athlete Adam Damadzic as he prepares his bid for Olympic success.
Westwood met the 19-year-old discus thrower at a pre-Olympic event and was immediately impressed. "Adam was Great Britain number one last year and he is very determined and focused. I was inspired and excited by his talk and immediately offered him £1,000 to help," he says. "He is from Worcester, I wanted to support someone locally and I thought it would be fun and a great way to get involved in the Olympic Games."
Damadzic, on his part, is delighted with the support. "Neil offered to sponsor me, without hesitation. It's expensive going to competitions and the money will help pay for my travel and go towards equipment," he says. "It's great to be associated with a successful company from Dragons' Den and when I tell people it gets their attention."
Westwood says helping the young athlete will bring benefits to business too. "It's a win-win situation; I think Adam will get more sponsorship from local companies when they realise how good he is. I didn't know about him until two weeks ago - I'm sure others will want to get involved when they find out about him," he explains.
"We will benefit from more people knowing about us, and maybe some sports professionals will start using Magic Whiteboard - it's good for keeping scores and organising team tactics. But overall it's a positive thing to do and we are proud to help him."
Westwood is encouraging other small businesses to follow his lead and support a local athlete. "It's great publicity, it helps the athletes achieve their goals and it's great to follow someone's journey," he concludes.
