The poll of 400 UK self-employed professionals and small business owners, by creative software developer Serif, revealed that 74% have not yet designed a version of their website, which is suitable for smartphones and 86% for viewing on tablets such as the iPad.
These are worrying figures for small business owners as 84% of smartphone users browse the internet on their phones and social media sites such as Twitter are driving more mobile traffic.
However, only one in ten small businesses believe it is necessary to have a mobile-ready version of their website and 40% don't even know how their site appears on mobile.
Managing director at Serif, Gary Bates, finds these statistics staggering, "A branded website adds perceived professionalism, which makes it one of the most effective marketing tools, and a matching mobile-ready version adds even more credibility - essential for keeping existing customers and attracting new ones," he says.
The stats also found that 40% of small businesses don't have a website at all.
