Tired of working every weekend?

Running a small business is never going to be a 9-5 job - there's always something to be done. However, there's a lot to be said for having uninterrupted time off to spend with friends and family or to pursue other hobbies and interests.

Taking the weekend off will help you feel re-energised, rested and raring to go. These tips could help - try them this week and let's see how you get on.

Don't try to do everything yourself. The best in business know that delegation is key. This could involve taking on a member of staff or hiring a freelancer, virtual assistant or even someone to help around the home. Use the help you can afford so that you can focus on what you do best.

Investing in the right tools, such as software and apps, can also cut the time you need to spend on jobs such HR, accounting and stock management.

In the time set aside for working, make sure you actually do work! Don't faff on the internet or noodle about in the house - really knuckle down and be productive. Try the alarm clock method - set the alarm for 30 minutes and work solidly, taking an internet break or whatever only when the alarm goes off. You'll be surprised how much you can get done in short, uninterrupted bursts. Turning off your email during these half-hour slots is also essential.

Try using the RescueTime app to see where you're wasting time and to block internet access if you really can't resist.

Get your pricing right

If you're working all week and the weekends too in order to make ends meet, you might have your pricing wrong and need to reassess.

Sit down to work out what you'd need to charge to work full-time with weekends off - don't forget to factor in holidays and other key dates.

Say no

Sometimes you have to say no, whether it's to taking on extra work or socialising when you need to be working. You make your own schedule so make sure you're using it to your advantage.

Make plans

You may sometimes end up working just because you're in the house or have no other plans. Try making specific plans for the weekend every now and then so you have something to look forward to and a reason to blast through that to-do list.
