#O2SmartaBiz winner: Cannon & Cannon

Cannon & Cannon Smarta 2

Proposition: One sentence explanation of what your business is

Cannon & Cannon source and develop the finest cuts of artisan British charcuterie and bring them to market.

Why are you a smart business?

Our business is pure. We started from a table at a local village hall. We look for three key factors in our products: quality, provenance and a great story. Absolute confidence in our product means we can go forth and sell in earnest. Everything we do starts with our passion for the product. The rest follows. We apply these simple principles whether taking a product to a farmers’ market or to a major client. It’s all about the sausage, as we like to say.

What’s the smartest thing you’ve done to help your business grow?

When we spent some time developing our SEO and online presence, things started to change quickly for our business. That combined with rigorous vetting and training of our staff team means we present a smart, accessible and interactive shop window in the physical and electronic space.

What smart things do you do for your customers?

We value them. We select our wholesale clients carefully and look to build mutually beneficial and long term relationships with them from first contact. It’s the little things. We provided cured meats for a Charity Quiz for one, some chorizo for a Chef’s BBQ for another. Our retail customers are the lifeblood of our business and we make it our business to know them and to make their experience with us a joy. When we open our charcuterie school next year, we will have a space for our retail customers as well as our wholesale clients to learn about the great art of curing and get involved in making their own salami, hams and sausages from our site at Borough Market.

What smart technologies do you use to run your business?

We’ve found a wealth of services free on the web such as Invoice Journal, Insightly, Twitter and Gmail which essentially run the back end of our business, and it’s all 100% free!

What’s your smartest tip for other entrepreneurs?

Prepare yourself for the ride of your life.  Be bold. Establish and develop your idea and nail down exactly where you want to get to. Make sure your idea works without you running everything. A great entrepreneur needs to time to be that and, most likely, you’ll find people much better than you at running the various elements of your operation. Oh, and smile!
