60-second start-up: Penny Rossano Illustrations

5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence

I create one of a kind illustrations and artwork drawn freehand from my imagination in black/colour pen using inspiration from the world around me.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

I produce illustrations which I then put up on my website where they can be viewed and purchased direct from me. I also accept commissions, and in this instance will discuss in detail the requirements for the design/illustration with the person needing the artwork so that I can produce what they want. I also intend to sell my work at Art markets and in small independent shops.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Other illustrators, I guess, though I like to think my designs have their own style singling them out as my work, so I hope they can stand on their own…

5-20 seconds: What's your USP?

Well, my work is genuinely unique and I have been told it has a whimsical quality like me, so you won't get anything quite like it by going elsewhere. It's all in my head!

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

Mmm, well, myself and the help of Mr Credit card!!!

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I have had many guises in my time, and still do… opera singer, business analyst, editor, and most recently being a mum, I like to juggle what I do and keep things varied and interesting.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

I was twiddling my thumbs when my new son was asleep one day and thought what can I do? I know, I'll draw some pictures for him from my imagination, and these are what came out.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Facebook seems to have been a good call just to get people to see that I am doing something new and spread the word. I'm also very proud of my web site.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Chopping up my hands with a cheap mount board cutter when trying to package my work!!! Totally rubbish and ended up spending more money on new equipment and boards!! Taught me a lesson.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A jaffa cake.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

As I am an illustrator, rather than an idea as such, I would like to say that I am rather jealous of the talent of illustrator Arthur Rackham. Maybe I am allowed to be jealous of his artistic ideas too. Amazingly beautiful, luminous and imaginative illustrations.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

I would love to have created a book/children's book using my designs and to have the space, time and funds to create larger works. I also intend to have a prolific amount of illustrations done by then. I just can't stop!! It's obsessive.
