60 second start-up: Bluebird Tea Co.

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence:

The UK's first tea company specialising in Tea Mixology, creating unique and bespoke blends of loose leaf teas, fresh healthy iced teas, tea cocktails and other tea based drinks.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We currently sell our range of over 50 loose leaf teas and innovative teaware online through our online shop www.bluebirdteaco.com . We also take our iced tea trike to many events and festivals, mixing up fresh fruity iced teas.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Were the first and only UK company focusing purely on Tea Mixology - the creation of a huge range of unique and bespoke blends of tea. But we are grateful to the big players such as Whittards and Teapigs who have opened up the market and people's eyes to different types of tea.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

We specialise in blends and have a massive range from herbal to greens and oolongs and some unique and unusual ingredients like yerba mate, coffee leaves and chocolate, in between.

We also use these blends to make fresh iced teas, tea lattes, tea cocktails and even tea smoothies that are super tasty and packed full of good stuff too!

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

Savings from working way too many jobs at once and being lucky enough to be able to move back home when the finances looked tough.

We both strongly believe that you can achieve a hell of a lot without having to spend a huge amount of money - it just takes a bit of creative thinking and patience.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

Krisi was managing a Tea Company and trained for 6 months blending in Canada. Mike was managing a hotel and was a ski instructor out in Canada too. We both came back from Canada to set up Bluebird.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

We were heavily influenced by the Canadian way of life and the way they do tea! Our name comes from the Canadian ski term ‘A Bluebird Day’ which means a perfect day with blue skies and fresh snow. Everyone out there is focused on enjoying life and embracing new things so we really wanted to bring that concept to people back home in the UK and we chose to do it through tea!

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Getting involved with organisations such as Smarta and the others out there that help us so much as a start up. We have had so many opportunities from contacts to events, pop up spaces to desk spaces. It has been invaluable.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Blowing a large amount of money on branded take away cups right at the very start. We have since learnt it is essential to keep your money in the bank as long as you can as cash flow is so important to a start up business like ours.

There is no point having no money in the bank but 5,000 cups in the store cupboard!

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

Jaffa cake (controversial I know!)

Because we are trying to take something well loved and classic and reinventing it into a modern, innovative and fun concept.

Is it a tea? Is it a smoothie? Does it taste like chocolate? Is it a health drink?! Discovering that tea and tea mixology can span all sorts of categories is all part of the fun!

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

The cliche has to be Innocent, although its a very simple idea just executed excellently. It is their approach to business and people that really inspires us.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

We are going to be on a high street near you and we will be THE online shop for tea!
