0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence
Salon quality hair care where YOU call the shots. Our unique Mixology Technology means 'bespoke couture blends'.
5-10 seconds: What's the business model?
We're a multi-channel business, combining retail, online sales and also international sales via selected distribution partners. We're launching the world's first 'Shampyou Bar' at Selfridges (London) on the 25th of July. Come and see!
10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?
Concoction is one of a kind. Sure - we're going up against some very big players in the beauty world. But we're here to mix things up a bit.
15-20 seconds: What's your USP?
With Concoction, YOU call the shots. This allows customers to create their own bespoke couture 'hair cocktails' that perfectly care for their hair. Once our special SuperSerum shots are added, each Concoction is shaken like a cocktail. We've also developed our own unique 'Mixology Technology'.
20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?
Up until recently I had funded Concoction using my own personal money (you've got to be in it to win it). More recently some angels have come on board with seed capital. One of my most respected entrepreneurs Will King is one of those angels - via his company King of Shaves.
25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?
I was Head of Communications at one of the UK's fastest growing technology businesses where my 'boss' was a very driven entrepreneur. He taught me a lot!
30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?
Many different personal experiences have influenced the idea. My parents did a fair bit of DIY as I was growing up. I always noticed the 'paint mixing' area at DIY stores and thought there should be a similar thing for cosmetics.
35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?
I've concocted a top-quality advisory board for the brand. This includes Millie Kendall MBE (co-founder Ruby & Mille / BeautyMART), Will King (founder King of Shaves) and Harvey Jacobson (Executive Chairman of footwear business The Jacobson Group).
40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?
Before I started working with top cosmetic chemists, I started experimenting with my own blends at home. This led to some very weird mixtures that didn't smell too good. I now leave it to the experts every time.
45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?
Concoction would be a very indulgent homemade cookie. It would be topped with all different things - choc-chips, hundreds and thousands and of course pieces of caramel.
50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?
I'm always jealous of Pret a Manger. Great food, great brand!
55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?
We're going to be in the world's finest department stores. From Paris to Berlin (via Tokyo and Sydney).
