60 second start-up: Saddle and Spoke

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence

An online store presenting a curated selection of stylish cycling accessories from young brands around the world, offering the very best and most exciting designs in one place

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We’re an ecommerce site selling and distributing our collection of cycling accessories to customers around the world.  We search the globe to find the very best new labels and designs, so we can be first to offer customers the latest in stylish, urban cycling accessories. By working with a number of our labels on an exclusive basis we can ensure our selection is unique.

Saddle & Spoke features brands with new and exciting ideas, a history and passion for both design and cycling. Every product is reviewed on its design merits, materials, aesthetic quality, efficiency and comfort - this approach has enabled us to secure an exciting range of exclusive products.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Adeline Adeline in New York, En Selle Marcel in Paris, Velorution in London, however these brands are bricks-and-mortar shops who use their online and e-commerce presence as a secondary channel. Currently there is no other online store that focuses purely on cycling accessories from new brands around the world, offering style and quality. We’re the first!

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

A shared love for design and cycling. With a unique selection of the very best, new and hard-to-find cycling accessories, we’ve created a single destination to explore and discover designs that will enhance and express your personal style and vision for cycling.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

I received a small contribution from an investor, which helped enormously in the early stages. Apart from this, the business has been entirely self-funded and profits have been re-invested.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I’ve worked in the design industry for 15 years, most recently as a project manager.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

I love cycling and design. I would scour the Internet for new, unique and beautifully made cycling accessories. I found a treasure trove of young brands creating exciting products for the style-conscious urban cyclist, but to track them down took serious time and energy. So, there was the need to bring them all into one place; an online store uniting these designs and brands from around the globe, cutting out the need for cyclists to trawl the internet for themselves.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Establishing firm relationships with my suppliers and continuing to create, develop and maintain relationships with our customers and suppliers using social media.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Not analysing website statistics from the very beginning on a regular basis to monitor usage trends and gather insight. We’re doing it now though!

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

It would need to be a box of selected delicious and different artisan biscuits from around the globe.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

Whoever thought of the Wallpaper city guides. It’s a great brand extension idea providing their style conscious readers and savvy traveller with a need-to-know checklist of the best a location has to offer. Lovely simple design and format.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

Our site will have many more brands and product categories, we’ll have worked on a number of exciting collaboration projects and hopefully entered into a physical retail space either our own or a Saddle & Spoke branded concession.
