Wave Native is a young ethical surf clothing brand with designs heavily influenced by our New Zealand heritage and the tribal nature of surfing.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

Internet-based sales model at the moment, looking to push into retail outlets in the UK then internationally over the next 12 months.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

The large and overbearing surf brands to the small and nimble!

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

We’re a New Zealand surf brand, with a UK base and a global flavour. All our products comply by international ethical manufacturing standards.  We’ll be taking this one step further soon with the launch a new range of eco-friendly boardshorts made from recycled and regenerated materials. We’re launching a KickerStarter campaign next month to raise funds to develop and launch these boardshorts.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

Me, family and friends.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

Marketing, musician, pastry chef, photographer’s assistant.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

Had it for years, just took turning 40, a classic mid-life crisis and a desire to get me and my kids back to the beach to kick it into action.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Believe in myself, focus on the goal and never give up. It is a cliché but anything is possible if you keep belief and focus.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Getting too excited by too many designs and spending too much money getting them all produced straight away.  Never reveal all your cards at once.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A sausage roll. We prefer not to conform to sugar-based stereotypes.  And, we like sausage rolls.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

The rubber band. Genius. Still unsurpassed and still selling!  It’s simplicity that often holds complexity together.  Like the Wave Native company wallet for example.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

A mix of 50 / 50 internet and retail sales.  Building recognition internationally as a well-designed, well-manufactured ethical and loyal surf brand.
