Winnies is a retro inspired colourful jumper company.
We are students selling to students. This allows us to develop garments that genuinely reflect what our peers are after and forces us to stay proactive rather than reactive in terms of changing consumer demands.
There are several university clothing brands popping up, however, we don’t feel we are aligned to any one in particular, we bring together a collection of characteristics from many different labels.
The original tri-coloured jumper maker.
Every penny invested has been funded through sales. As we were originally responsible for stitching our jumpers we were able to produce individual pieces and make the appropriate mark up to cover our over heads. What’s great about our model is we have been able to make a profit from day one.
Charlotte took a year off to travel the world before getting stuck into her studies at Newcastle University, whilst Hugo has been completing a 4 year university course in Lausanne, Switzerland.
4 years ago! We were spending the summer at our families lake house in Canada and with little but a sewing machine to keep us busy we learnt how to stitch… With several old, colourful and whacky jumpers lying around, we thought it would be fun to pull them apart, swap arms and stitch them back together to create something pretty unique.
Since then, the small amount of jumpers that were made that summer are still being worn, so we decided to launch a whole range!
Keeping all aspects of the business based in England. Being able to support local businesses and individuals has been greatly rewarding.
Thinking that starting a company whilst at university was going to be easy…
