BR4ND (Building Reputations 4 New Designers) is an on-trend, designer fashion outlet featuring a range of cutting-edge clothing and accessories for men, women and children across a fair trade retail platform for fresh designer talent. 

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

For shoppers: they keep one step ahead of the crowd by only wearing designs from innovative, up and coming designer talent.

For designers: we offer a secure retail platform that operates on a fair trade ‘commission’ basis allowing them to build their reputation in a supportive environment.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

ASOS comes pretty close and any other not-on-the-high-street focused fashion outlet.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

We showcase a variety of unique and independent designer labels and champion fashion innovation that goes against the grain of high street mass-production.  From a designer perspective we offer a much fairer deal than other online platforms in terms of trading and we have no subscription fees.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

To date, we have funded everything ourselves as we had a fairly low start-up cost.  They key is keeping everything very lean and streamlined moving forward so we only invest where we really need to.  That way you ensure both growth and stability in the long term.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I was a student studying Business at Northumbria University.  In fact I have only just completed my final year so up until now I have been juggling a new venture alongside my studies which has been challenging but for the good!  Now it is full steam ahead…

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

The idea came to me after hearing about a friends’ older sister (a fashion designer) getting completely ripped off in a joint venture with two big fashion outlets just so she could get some exposure for her amazing designs; I knew fashion was a cutthroat business this didn’t seem ethical. I soon realised there was a gap in the market for an outlet that could actually help to build reputations for new designers rather than stifle them; and BR4ND was born.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

There are two.  The first is listening to my father (a very successful serial entrepreneur) he inspired me to follow my instincts and set up BR4ND. And second, hiring an old friend as my operations manager to run the day to day element of the business.  This has allowed me to finish university safe in the knowledge that someone I trust is keeping everything ticking along smoothly, both the business and my degree would have definitely suffered otherwise.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

During my student years?  How long have you got?! Oh, 5 seconds.  In that case I haven’t done anything especially stupid YET.  There is still time though and I’ve probably just jinxed that now!

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

A Dairy Milk/Ritz Cracker biscuit.  New, intriguing, delicious and something a little bit different.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit jealous of Mr Zuckerburg.  Having that level of impact across the lives of over 500 million people is pretty incredible.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

We plan to expand into other markets where creative designers are struggling to break through and be recognised.  In 12 months we’re aiming to be a household name representing some of the most exciting, up and coming brands in the fashion world and then replicate that model within the homes & interiors sector too.
