60 second startup: Blacklane

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence

Blacklane is an innovative marketplace that offers easy booking of first class on-order chauffeur services at economy prices in over 150 cities around the globe.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We ask for commission from rides booked through our platform.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

None really – some would say on-demand taxi and limo apps, but we offer on-order chauffeur-service for business travelers with a high need for planning reliability, fixed prices and travel expense solutions.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

We are the only truly global online booking platform for chauffeur services that can be booked in advance at a fixed price close to taxi rates – frequent travelers also appreciate the global coverage of over 150 cities worldwide.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

We have received funding from several financial and strategic investors.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I was a Principal at Boston Consulting Group.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

The idea for Blacklane was born in Chicago when I was working for BCG. I often used black car services and frequently had trouble with the booking process and travel expense management. Besides that, prices were usually out of this world and offers had local restrictions. I wanted to make such a comfortable product more accessible and affordable for frequent business travelers.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Marrying my wife, building a family with two healthy boys, and founding Blacklane with my co-Founder, Frank Steuer.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Having not founded Blacklane earlier.

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

Delicious Lindt chocolate. Once you’ve tasted the difference between ordinary chocolate (taxis) or overpriced luxury chocolate (traditional limousine services), you never go back to the ordinary and always stick with Lindt chocolate.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

I find many start-up ideas thrilling, but none of them would be a better fit to me than Blacklane.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

I’ll be here at Blacklane in Berlin working with very talented people and helping travelers around the world getting from A to B in style and peace of mind.
