App of the Week: Duolingo

What is it?

Duolingo offers you college-quality eduction without the price tag. The app offers courses in Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese - giving you plenty of choice to scrub up on your foreign languages.

If you’re thinking about learning another language but you can’t afford both the time and money to start a course, then Duolingo ticks all the boxes. What better way to learn French or Italian then on the morning commute to work? Instead of wasting the train hours away, you can be productive and scratch up on your languages that’ll benefit you in the long run. All you have to do is create a profile that can be used across all platforms and you’re good to go!

Who is it for?

Anyone that wants to learn the basics of another language. However, anyone who is looking for productivity during spare hours should give Duolingo a shot too. Instead of waiting around listening to Oasis, you could use the spare 5-10 minutes you have a day learning another language.

Once you create a profile, you choose your preferred language and begin completing the tasks. There’s plenty of tasks to get stuck into and you can compare your scores with your friends so there’s a bit of competition about it too.

It was recently named Apple’s App Of The Year and Google Play’s Best Of The Best, so its obviously doing something right.

How will it improve my day-to-day?

Imagine if you’re working with international clients or a foreign developer is working on your website but communicating is difficult because you don’t speak the same language. Being productive in your spare time and brushing up on your languages will go a hell of a long way, both in personal and career life.

It’s not just the business aspect of it. After working tirelessly to make your business the best it can be, you’ll definitely be in need of a nice little break away. Holiday will be so much better if you can communicate with the locals and you’re able to enjoy your break to the maximum.
