60 second start-up: Give A Grad A Go

0-5 seconds: Sum your business up in a sentence:

We provide brilliant businesses with high-calibre graduates.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

We give businesses who are hiring access to the country’s brightest grads. We shortlist candidates, vet them, and then arrange all interview logistics on behalf of our clients, and provide candidates with exciting positions within some of the UK’s leading and up-and-coming companies.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

Inspiring Interns, Instant Impact and Graduate Fasttrack, as well as the jobs boards like Milkround, Prospects, and Target Jobs.

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

No other graduate recruitment agency works across such a wide range of sectors. We recruit for digital and creative agencies, software houses, charities, high street brands, banks, consultancies – you name it. There are quite a few other grad recruitment firms out there, but most only place grads into sales or recruitment roles – we fill the gap in the market.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

I covered the initial set up costs with my own savings – which meant there were a lot of sleepless nights in the early stages! We’ve been fortunate that we’ve never had to seek funding or borrow to keep the business ticking over. Our revenue has increased steadily and this financial year should see us hit the £1m turnover mark for the first time.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

After graduating I worked in financial sales for ten years, starting in the FX market and finishing as a broker in the oil sector, so forming a graduate recruitment agency was a big change in direction! I knew I wanted to run my own business, but didn’t want it to be in the finance sector, so I spent a while thinking about my next move.

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

I heard a lot of conversations about how tough it was for graduates to find any work, and I also remembered how lost I was when I left uni. All this was at a time when large corporates were downsizing their graduate schemes, meaning that candidates who would have been snapped up a few years before were struggling to get a foot on the career ladder. Yet the tech and digital sectors, particularly in London, were flourishing and there were tons of start-ups looking to add to their team. That’s where the idea came from.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

Employed a team of hard-working, high-calibre graduates. Our business is testament to what we believe in – that grads make great employees, and can transform small businesses.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

Hired experienced recruiters who’d been out of work for a while. With so many recruitment positions available, if a recruiter isn’t working there’s probably a reason for it!

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?

We’d be a Twix. Our business is made up of two parts - our clients are one half, our candidates are the other.

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

WhatsApp. So simple. What a story.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

Sitting right here in the Give A Grad A Go office with more amazing people around me, trying to continue our success. We should have gone international by then and will have launched our brand new, game-changing graduate careers website.
