We caught up with Lily Simpson, who founded Detox Kitchen which featured in last year’s list in the “Startup of the Year” category. She told us about how her company is going from strength to strength in the nine months that have followed.
Lily – it’s great to speak to you again about the O2 Smarta 100 awards. How did you feel when you found out Detox Kitchen had been included in the awards?
Lily: “It felt really great – it’s always nice to be included in awards like this, you have the realisation that you have achieved something. Smarta work with so many amazing startup companies so it felt like we’d really made it.”
Did you feature in any interviews in the press following Detox Kitchen’s inclusion in the awards?
Lily: We got some great PR out of the awards – we were picked up by a couple of the trade magazines, which in addition to people looking again at the interview we did with the Telegraph in May of last year really helped out profile.
What’s happening at Detox Kitchen? Have you expanded further in the last nine months?
Lily: We opened another deli in Soho, which has been really successful. We turned over a million pounds in our last year, doubling what we did in the year prior which is an amazing achievement bearing in mind we did it without further investment. We moved into a new 4,000 square foot production kitchen, which has helped the business grow further too.
Do you have further plans to expand?
Lily: We’re looking to grow significantly in the next three years – we want to open five more delis and expand our delivery service further.
Do you have any advice to would be entrepreneurs out there?
Lily: Just do it – go with your instincts and make decisions quickly. It’s important to be confident in your ability and not to overthink things – you always need to be ahead of the game and it moves quickly.
I also think it’s important to focus on quality – Detox Kitchen has always been about making the best product we can, and it’s been successful because that quality set us apart from our competitors.
There is still time to enter the O2 Smarta 100 awards, with the closing date on September 12. The awards are in their fifth year and celebrate the most resourceful, inspiring and disruptive small businesses in the UK.
