Summer sunshine brings out the best in UK bosses

The survey of 2,000 office workers and 200 business owners also revealed that 25% of businesses implement flexible working policies, 13 per cent close early and 12 per cent give employees the option to work in an outside space, to celebrate summer in the UK.

But what impact do summer perks have?

The study showed that 58% of office workers and 48% of business owners believe they boost morale and make the business more productive. Interestingly, half of all office workers would rather bring their hours forward by an hour to enjoy longer evenings spending time with family or exercising.

However, business owners are more productive in the morning with only 19% saying they would use an extra hour first thing in the morning to have a lie in, compared to 49% of office workers who would rather have more time in bed.

So with flexible working hours obviously having a good impact, why don’t more businesses introduce them all year round?

Well according to 28% of business owners, a lack of trust stops them from introducing year round flexible working policies and just under a third of employees agreed.

And there’s proof that flexible working is making a big difference. 60% of office workers and 52% of business owners agreed it makes employees more productive, with just over a quarter of employees choosing a flexible working package over a pay rise.

Graham Long, Vice President of the Enterprise Business Team at Samsung UK commented: “This year we’ve been lucky to have a nice, sunny summer but you can’t always guarantee the sunshine in the UK.

“That doesn’t mean businesses should ignore the benefits flexible working can bring not just in summer but year round, as employees are clearly crying out for it.  The ubiquity of smartphones and tablets has changed consumer expectations of their work environments.

“They now understand that they no longer need to be restricted to traditional work spaces to do their job and this translated into schemes such as bring your own device (BYOD).”

Despite the obvious change in weather, there’s still a great opportunity for business owners to keep their employees happy by offering flexible working hours. Do you have a strategy for keeping your team happy?
