5 top tips for ecommerce businesses

1. Know your target market

This should go without saying but it’s surprising how many companies don’t research their target audience in great detail. Find out who your target customers are and what their pain points are with existing offerings or options.

You’ve really got to put yourselves in your customer’s shoes to truly deliver a great product and a great service.

2. Network, network, network

Business is always about people and building personal connections. The reason for this comes down to trust and the fact that people need to trust someone before they buy from them or work with them.

It’s also really important to simply tell as many people about your product or service as much as possible when your business is in growth stage. You never know where business opportunities will come from!

3. Don’t stop innovating

This is more important now than it ever has been before. Technology and digital capabilities within ecommerce are changing rapidly so consumers’ expectations are also changing quickly.

Even if your business is currently successful, don’t just sit back and pat yourself on the back. Never rest on your laurels and always strive for continual improvements.

4. Be flexible

Don’t get too stuck with what your vision of the business should look like. It’s always good to be open to different opportunities if they are presented or if it’s what the customer wants.

Be ready to change direction if it will be beneficial. Any business that wants to grow and stay fresh has to consider diversification or even changing direction completely if it’s what your audience wants.

5. Persistence and perseverance

One of my favourite quotes is from Steve Jobs, the late CEO of Apple, who said: “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” 

Building a business takes an enormous amount of time and so does continually growing a business. Don’t give up!
