iCracked is an on-demand repair service for iOS devices:  it’s a network of smart and trusted micro-entrepreneurs who come to you, to keep your iPhone and iPad connected.

5-10 seconds: What's the business model?

Our business model is to recruit and train people to set up their own businesses as iPhone repair men and women and then match them with consumers who log their repair issues on the site.

10-15 seconds: Who are your competitors?

While iCracked has no true competitors that offer comparable services from the repertoire of devices, quality of service and lifetime warranty, iMend in London offers a similar service. 

15-20 seconds: What's your USP?

We deliver an exceptional mobile device and tablet repair service that consumers can trust, which fits seamlessly into their busy lifestyle – helping to keep them connected whenever and wherever they are. We come to you and fix your device right before your eyes. We offer convenience and security all in one.

20-25 seconds: How have you funded it so far?

iCracked received a round of seed funding in 2012 as an alumni of the 2012 class of Y Combinator.

25-30 seconds: What were you doing before?

I was Head of Operations for Germany and Project Manager at Airbnb and I also founded Accoleo, a site which allows students to rent out their spare room or couch. 

30-35 seconds: Where did the idea come from?

Our founder AJ got fed up of paying to have his phone fixed numerous times at college so decided to learn how to fix it himself. He then started recruiting other students to fix broken phones to meet the growing demand.  Four years later, we have nearly 2,000 iTechs worldwide, and offices in San Francisco, London and Berlin and we are growing our revenue by 200% yearly.

35-40 seconds: What's the smartest thing you've done so far?

We established our office in east London not only as a headquarters for corporate employees, but as a meeting area for our iTechs to spend quite a bit of time at. We are able to do this now because our fleet is still quite a bit smaller than it is in the U.S., and we realised very early on how beneficial this was for building relationships and letting the iTechs learn from one another. They regularly come by and pool knowledge about repairs and have really bonded.

40-45 seconds: What's the stupidest?

We chose a building without an elevator. Not the smartest move for a hardware company that receives dozens of shipments weekly.  ;)

45-50 seconds: If your business was a biscuit, what would it be?  

Our iTechs are like shortbread biscuits, you can find one on every corner. 

50-55 seconds: Which idea are you a bit jealous of?

GoPro: it’s such a unique idea. Most super successful business appeal to a need, but GoPro appeals to people’s passions and experiences.

55-60 seconds: Where are you going to be in 12 months' time?

We are about to open an office in Berlin to continue our European expansion. As a city, it has a number of similarities to London and we anticipate a similar level of demand. The longer-term ambition is to make our service available in an additional fifteen countries by the end of 2015 – it’s ambitious, but that’s the way we’ve always been.

Where’s next after that remains to be seen, but we will continue to follow wherever consumer demand says a solution is needed to keeping phones connected We are constantly evolving our offering to improve the service consumers receive. For example, we are working on new scheduling and inventory management systems that will allow for a quicker turn around on repairs and better time management for our iTechs
