Two British startup success stories

Manufactured in the UK, Tangle Teezer is now exporting 90% of their products, producing 20 brushes a minute, of which 18 are sent overseas. “Without a question, technology has helped us stay agile and keep pace with demand,” Matt Lumb, CEO and Director explains. This has come when the importance of trade with Asia, especially China, was acknowledged in this year’s budget. The government pledged more money to UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) to support SMEs looking to do business there.

Tangle Teezer’s hairbrushes feature in beauty magazines globally, including OK! China, and Australian Vogue and its famous fans include Victoria Beckham, Emma Watson, Rita Ora and Rihanna. Matt Lumb continues, “Our growth has been completely organic, we’ve never paid a single penny for advertising yet have been lucky enough to receive lots of enthusiastic celebrity support.”

The Hut Group is an online retailer in the health and beauty sector, whose portfolio includes the MyProtein brand, the leading sports nutrition brand in Europe. Its websites operate in fourteen languages and twelve currencies with multiple payment systems and warehouses in the UK, Guernsey, America and Finland.

John Ellis, Finance Director for The Hut Group expands, “Our proprietary technology platform is key to driving our growth. For us the end goal to be able to analyse all transactions on the websites at a granular level and on a timely basis. We get complete visibility of the data, achieving a better analysis of the sales and margins with Sage as the data is consistent and with it our processes are more robust.”

Datel’s systems, therefore, provide a flexibility that works for very different companies. However, Alan Simpson, Executive Chairman, Datel points out that these “companies share a relentless focus on growth and require IT systems that can power international and multi-site expansion, which we’ve delivered using Sage’s solutions and a partnership approach.”

Jayne Archbold, CEO of Enterprise Market Europe explained, “High growth businesses rely on a blend of people, processes and technology in a careful mix. The Hut Group and Tangle Teezer have risen very fast because they have planned their business and support systems to flex and support a very rapid growth. Sage X3 and Sage 200 are designed to grow with a business and provide the enterprise backbone to any size of business.”
