Coast
Based in a barn just outside of Truro, social enterprise Coast
aims to 'enable tourism to become an agent of change for
sustainable development'. Encouraging and supporting small tourism
companies to adopt environmental practices and to become 'socially
deviant', it works in association with organisations including
VisitEngland and The Environmental Agency to run a series of
programmes, member networks, consultancy, training, events and even
voluntary beach cleans! Coast says its job is to 'encourage,
inform, network, research, lobby, measure, persuade, object,
question, bend ears, break boundaries and never knowingly give up'.
Rejected for grants on the basis they were 'too innovative' and
that 'environmental input does not equal economic output', Coast's
small team ploughed on regardless and now generates a turnover of
£120,000 with £36,000 profit.
